Who doesn’t love a chocolate cupcake? And what’s even better is celebrating them right around Halloween.  We can create a great spooky treat to help those little monsters and goblins get into the Halloween spirit!

Perfectly moist homemade chocolate cupcakes topped off with a silky vanilla cream cheese frosting! I haven’t met a person that could refuse them yet! Steve has even said that these are the BEST chocolate cupcakes he’s ever had. And to tell you the truth, I’m usually not a chocolate fan but even I think they are great. The secret ingredient is the sour cream! Y’all the flavor is fantastic.

Chocolate Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

Servings 9 cupcakes

Ingredients

Cupcakes:

  • ¼ Cup unsalted butter softened
  • ¼ Cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ Cup light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 Cup sour cream
  • 1 Cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 Cup milk

Frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese at room temperature
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Line a standard cupcake pan with 9 paper cupcake liners.
  3. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
  4. Mix in egg and vanilla. Scrape the bowl as needed.
  5. Mix in salt, baking soda and cocoa powder, followed by sour cream.
  6. Add flour, followed by milk. Mix until just combined and no streaks remain.
  7. Divide batter between prepared liners using a large cookie scoop.
  8. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Cool in pan for several minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
  11. Cream together the cream cheese and the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  12. Add the powdered sugar one cup at a time.
  13. Add in the vanilla extract; mix well.
  14. Frost, decorate and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

This frosting recipe is enough to spread on two dozen cupcakes or cookies. If you would like to pipe it as seen in the pictures, I would double the recipe.
