Durango, Colorado or Bust!
My husband, Steve, L-O-V-E-S Durango, Colorado!
Any chance he gets he wants to go.
When I think of Colorado, I like most people, think of skiing, cold, winter. However, I learned that there is much more to Colorado than just awesome skiing, so this year I surprised Steve with a weekend get-a-way and we ventured out to enjoy some good food, brews and sites on an epic non-skiing summer vacation!
In my opinion, Durango, Colorado is one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S., located in the southwest corner of Colorado. For us it was a about a five-hour drive from Flagstaff, Arizona which was, it’s about a five-hour drive from Denver, or a 45-minute flight. And while many people might choose to stay in Denver when visiting Colorado, they’re missing out on a gem in the Southwest. The city offers the adventure traveler some of the most exciting experiences, from rafting in the summer to skiing in the winter, and hiking, mountain biking, train rides and plenty of other fun options any time of year.
Our first stop in the area was to Honeyville.
Have you heard of the Honeyville Colorado? The history of Honeyville is just like the product, thick, rich, and flavorful. Some of the family beehives are still located on the same meadows and mountain hillsides where the distant view of the majestic La Plata Mountains helps the bees enjoy their job of collecting nature’s sweet nectar. Unknowing of the ever-changing world around them, they continue to bring the same quality high altitude honey to their hives as they have for over 90 years.
They have some many things to offer for sale. Steve and I sampled some of the whiskeys made in their distillery, as well as wines, jellies and sauces. And let me tell you all, had I not been sticking to my budget I would have bought a lot more! As it was we left with Cinnamon Honey Spread, Chokecherry Jelly, and Mountain Peach Drink Mixer.
If you stop in, the wonderful staff is happy to share more information about the processes they use. AND don’t forget the samples! Y’all have to taste of all the yumminess that they have for sale.
Time for some rest!
We are pretty much exhausted at this point after getting up at 4am to start our drive. Steve was a little eager to get here. We were so happy to check into the resort we will be staying at, Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Durango.
The resort is absolutely beautiful, situated right on the bank of the Animas River, within walking distance of downtown Durango and the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This is the view we have been waking up to!
We both loved this delicious welcome!
Here is a quick peek at our accommodations. The rooms are so comfy cozy, and they do a great job making sure everything is in order. With the temperature hitting a high of 85°F, the a/c in the room is getting a lot of use but its so quiet that you can’t even tell it’s running.
Among the many amenities is the pool and hot tub, gym which are open year-round.
Now we are off to the outdoor beer garden to enjoy some live music, awesome dinner and the breathtaking view!
